Cycling injuries can be generally classified as:

  • Acute usually involving macro trauma and often the result of a fall
  • Chronic usually involving microtrauma pain syndromes

These are often due to:

  1. A poorly fit bike
  2. Improper sport skills
  3. Improper physical preparation
  4. Training errors

These account for more than 85% of cycling injuries, while common pain locations are the knees, shoulders/neck, hands and buttock/seat region. The good news is that the vast majority of these problems can be successfully addressed by a Bike Fit Physical Therapy Specialist.

Glenda Maines DPT and John Dean DPT are both Bike PT Specialists who received their training from nationally renowned Erik Moen PT, the founder of BikePT. Glenda is also an avid cyclist, who loves the challenge of a century ride, while the Dalmac is often part of her annual ride calendar. John is also a USAT Certified Level 1 Triathlon Coach and his main interest is working with triathletes of all levels and uses his expertise to help them ride efficiently and without pain while training and competing.

A Bike Fit Physical Therapy Specialist is uniquely qualified to help you prevent or recover from chronic cycling related injuries as we have:

  1. A biomechanical knowledge that enables us to determine how posture and motion can adversely affect cycling mechanics
  2. An understanding of tissue pathology (i.e. how injury can occur)
  3. An understanding of the significance of muscle imbalance
  4. A knowledge of periodization training
  5. The knowledge to successfully treat cycling injuries and return the cyclist successfully to riding
  6. The know how to make key adjustments to your bike so you can ride further, faster and painlessly!

 

The Fit-2-Bike – 5 Key Components

 

  1. Musculoskeletal Evaluation including:
    • Upper Quadrant, Spinal and Lower Quadrant Testing and An Assessment of Muscle Imbalance
  2. Static Evaluation of the Rider on their Bike including:
    • Foot position on the pedal
    • Knee positions over the pedal
    • Trunk angles and spine posture
    • Shoulder and elbow angles
    • Hand position
    • Knee-Elbow overlap
    • Stance width and frontal plane postures
  3. Dynamic Evaluation of the Rider on their Bike
  4. Overall Assessment
  5. Bike Modifications/ Adjustments and Recommendations
