Neuralgia is a stabbing, burning, and usually severe pain that happens along damaged nerves. These damaged nerves could literally be anywhere in your body. However, the most common areas are the neck and face.  Diseases such as multiple sclerosis or diabetes can be conducive to damaged nerves.  Even shingles, or old age can cause it.  Your prescribed treatment plan will be according to the cause, trust the experienced Physical Therapists at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy in Brighton, MI to administer the right personalized care.

It has been established that Neuralgia can happen in various parts of the body originating from different causes.

There are 3 Classifications of Neuralgia:

Postherpetic Neuralgia – this happens due to complications with shingles.  Neuralgia can erupt in the general area of your shingles outbreak with either mild or severe effects.  In some instances, it can be persistent or intermittent, and can last for months, perhaps even years.

Trigeminal Neuralgia - is related with pain from the trigeminal nerve which connects the brain to the face.  The primary origin of the pain is supposedly due to blood vessels pressing down on the trigeminal nerve where it connects with the brainstem. Trigeminal neuralgia leads to pain in the face, normally on one side, very common with the elderly.

Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia - involves pain from the glossopharyngeal nerve located in the throat.

Physical therapy is often times recommended in the treatment of this condition. Relieving the pressure on the nerve caused by blood vessels, bones, ligaments, or tumors are the main focus during therapy sessions.  A healthy diet and exercise will definitely hasten the healing process.  Physical Therapists at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy in Brighton MI employs advanced methods, specialized programs and develop tailored fit plans for each of their patient's needs.
